Little Bakers at Buckle My Shoe!
The kitchen at Buckle My Shoe was alive with the best kind of chaos this month. Flour dusted little noses, the warm scent of baking drifted through the centre, and small hands worked with surprising focus and determination. Mixing bowls clinked, spoons scraped, and the hum of children's voices filled the room with questions, laughter, and the occasional triumphant cheer. From cookies to crumbles to cakes, our busy bakers have been rolling up their sleeves and diving in - and the results have been nothing short of delicious!

What unfolded in the kitchen was pure, joyful learning in action. The tamariki measured and poured, stirred and kneaded, watching ingredients transform before their eyes. One tamaiti, carefully stirring the mixture, looked up and announced with great authority, "I'm a real baker now!" There were moments of real perseverance - steady hands learning to roll dough, patience waiting for the oven timer - and moments of pure delight when the finished kai was shared amongst friends. Working alongside each other, our tamariki discovered that baking is so much more fun together.

These kitchen adventures are rich with learning that connects beautifully to Te Whāriki. Through baking, tamariki are exploring Mana Reo - communicating, questioning, and making meaning - while Mana Aotūroa comes alive as they investigate cause and effect, sequences, and science in the simplest, most satisfying way. Our Preschool Pillars programme weaves naturally through experiences like this, building the early numeracy, literacy, and self-management skills that support school readiness. And through our Growing Great Character kaupapa, kaiako gently nurture resilience and kindness - because learning to share the last cookie takes real courage.
There is something quietly powerful about watching a child beam with pride over something they have made with their own hands. These baking moments are about so much more than kai - they are about belonging, contribution, and growing confidence. Our kaiako love witnessing the focus and joy tamariki bring to these experiences, and we warmly invite whanau to ask your little one about their time in the kitchen this month. Better yet, come and see our Cameron Rd centre for yourself - there may even be something freshly baked waiting for you.
