Potion Masters at Buckle My Shoe!
The outdoor space at Buckle My Shoe buzzed with quiet focus and barely contained excitement this afternoon. Containers of vivid green and blue dye sat waiting on the table, catching the light like something magical. Little hands reached for droppers and plastic spoons, eyes wide with curiosity. Leaves and handfuls of sand were gathered from the garden, and the air was filled with the earthy scent of nature and possibility. Something wonderful was about to be brewed - and our tamariki were absolutely ready for it. ❤️
With great concentration and even greater delight, the tamariki set to work mixing, measuring, and creating their very own outdoor potions. Droppers were carefully squeezed, sending plumes of colour swirling through water. Spoonfuls of sand were stirred in ceremoniously, and leaves were added like secret ingredients. One of our little ones held their container up to the sky and declared, "Mine is the most powerful one - it has blue AND green AND magic sand!" The laughter, the focus, the shared discoveries between older and younger tamariki - it was pure, joyful ako in action. 😊
What looked like potion-making was, in fact, rich, layered learning unfolding beautifully. Our tamariki were exploring early science and mathematics - observing colour change, comparing quantities, predicting outcomes, and developing fine motor precision with droppers and spoons. This kind of open-ended, nature-connected play sits at the heart of our Preschool Pillars programme, where curiosity and capability go hand in hand. It also echoes Growing Great Character values - we watched children encourage one another, share resources with generosity, and persist with ideas that didn't work quite first time. Resilience and creativity, side by side.😍

Across Te Whāriki, threads of Exploration, Communication, and Contribution were woven through every moment of today's play. Our tamariki belonged fully - to the activity, to each other, and to the space around them. Here on Cameron Road, we love that learning can look like muddy hands, brilliant colour, and a child utterly absorbed in their own wonderful idea. These are the moments we treasure and the stories we can't wait to keep telling together.
